Galaxy velocity dispersion
In astronomy, the velocity dispersion (σ) is the statistical dispersion of velocities about the mean velocity for a group of astronomical objects, such as an open cluster, globular cluster, galaxy, galaxy cluster, or supercluster. By measuring the radial velocities of the group's members through astronomical spectroscopy, the velocity dispersion of that group can be estimated and used to derive the group's mass from the virial theorem. Radial velocity is found by measuring the Doppl… Webtigate the dependence of on galaxy properties and thus pro-Mbh vide clues to the role of central black holes in galaxy formation and evolution. In this Letter, we present a new correlation be-tween line-of-sight velocity dispersion and black hole mass that has very little intrinsic scatter (probably less than 40% in ).Mbh 1 Hubble Fellow.

WebOct 21, 2001 · 1 Introduction. Dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxies provide a unique testing field for the theories of structure formation. Owing to their large velocity dispersions they are believed to be dominated by dark matter (hereafter DM, for a review see Mateo 1997).Because of their small masses they also lie in the regime of small accelerations, … WebApr 4, 2024 · The velocity dispersion of individual stars in a star cluster can be measured in the same way, but if the stars are unresolved (as in a distant galaxy) the velocity …
WebarXiv.org e-Print archive WebThe observed velocity dispersion is along the observer’s line-of-sight, seen as a function of the projected distance from the host galaxy. Therefore, it is necessary to integrate velocities along the line-of-sight: σ LOS 2 ( R) = ∫ 0 ∞ y 2 + ( 1 - β) R 2 r - …
WebAn updated catalogue of 76 galaxies, with direct measurements of supermassive black-hole mass ( Mbh) plus, when available, the central velocity dispersion (σ 0) of their host bulge is provided. Fifty of these mass measurements are considered reliable, while the others remain somewhat uncertain at this time.
