WebCyproheptadine has antianaphylactic activity that is associated with its ability to slow down the release of histamine and other mediators from fat cells. It is mainly used for treating bronchial asthma attacks, allergic bronchitis, rhinitis, and allergic skin reactions as well as in adjuvant therapy for anaphylactic reactions. WebMECHANISM OF ACTION. Cyproheptadine does not prevent the release of histamine, as do cromolyn and nedocromil, but rather competes with free histamine for binding at H1-receptor sites. Cyproheptadine competitively antagonizes the effects of histamine on H1-receptors in the GI tract, uterus, large blood vessels, and bronchial smooth muscle.
